OUR SERVICES
Supporting people to live life on their own terms
SCIL provides Personal Assistants, Healthcare Assistants, Home Care Workers and Social Care Workers in the County Sligo area under contract to the HSE.
OUR APPROACH
We support people to live their lives as they choose, respecting each person’s autonomy and individuality.
We do not seek to change people or focus on “improving” them. Instead, we meet each person where they are on any given day, valuing and respecting them for who they are.
We believe every person has inherent worth and value exactly as they are. While we welcome opportunities to explore growth, development and flourishing, we are equally committed to simply walking alongside those who want companionship, understanding and support.
PERSONAL ASSISTANTS
Supporting independence, choice and participation
Personal Assistants support individuals with physical or sensory disabilities to live as independently as possible, both at home and in the wider community.
The person receiving the service decides what they want their Personal Assistant to support them with on each visit. Support may take place at home or in the community, and can be arranged around appointments, events and individual routines.
A Personal Assistant can provide support with personal care, including hoisting, transfers and physiotherapy support, as well as transport, administration and communication, shopping, food preparation, cooking, advocacy, social events and community participation.
HOME CARE WORKERS
Supporting people at home with care and dignity
Support can include personal care, meal preparation and cooking, domestic cleaning, laundry and medication prompting. The service is predominantly care-plan led and is particularly suited to individuals whose medical needs are higher.
Our approach is centred on supporting people to live as independently as possible, while respecting their choices, routines and individual needs.
HEALTHCARE ASSISTANTS
Qualified care and support where it matters most
In SCIL, the Healthcare Assistant role is specifically for workers providing “agency hours” in HSE group homes, helping to provide consistent, person-centred support within these residential settings.
As with all our services, our approach is centred on respecting each person’s autonomy, individuality and right to live their life as they choose.
WHAT PEOPLE SAY
Making a difference in our community
In 1996 I met Sean Brennan, who became a friend and invited me to join the committee of his new company, the Centre for Independent Living. Its aim was to help people live as independently as possible with the support of Personal Assistants. As a leader, I have gained a great deal from CIL, including the chance to live the life I want. I hope to remain a leader with Sligo CIL for as long as possible. Beyond the PA service, CIL created Number 45, a welcoming pop-in centre where leaders, staff and the public can enjoy a cup of tea, company and activities. It builds confidence and teaches new skills, and for me it has helped develop my painting and art.
During my time on CE, I received excellent training opportunities, both online and in person. I had the opportunity to participate in a very meaningful project and thoroughly enjoyed being part of the Number 45 team. I felt that the support provided made a positive difference to the guests who accessed the service. I was also offered QQI training, which helped me develop new skills and gain valuable work experience. This experience has opened up further employment opportunities for me.

SOCIAL SUPPORT WORKERS
Building connections, confidence and community
Our Social Support Workers support individuals with a learning disability, autism or an enduring mental illness, primarily in the community.
Support focuses on identifying interests and values that are important to each person and finding opportunities to develop those interests locally. Workers can also provide guidance around social cues and norms, recognising potentially abusive interactions, and setting realistic expectations in a supportive and respectful way.
We place a strong emphasis on community engagement and time in nature as sustainable foundations for wellbeing throughout life.
