ABOUT SCIL

Supporting independence and inclusion since 1996

Sligo Centre for Independent Living CLG (SCIL) is a not-for-profit organisation established in 1996 by a group of local people with physical disabilities.

SCIL was founded in 1996 by Sean Brennan RIP, Eugene O’Brien RIP, Tom Cunningham and Gerry McEvoy RIP. Their vision and commitment to independent living laid the foundations for the organisation we are today.

From the beginning, SCIL has maintained a strong voice at director level, ensuring that the experiences and perspectives of people living with disabilities remain central to our organisation.

We were established to promote self-determination and independence, while supporting people to participate fully and equally in their communities. These principles continue to guide everything we do today.

OUR VALUES

Independence. Equality. Inclusion. Choice. Respect.

These values have been at the heart of SCIL since we were established in 1996. They guide how we work with the people we support, our colleagues and our wider community.

INDEPENDENCE

Supporting people to have choice and control over their own lives.

EQUALITY

Promoting equal opportunities and participation for everyone.

INCLUSION

Creating communities where everyone is welcomed, valued and included.

N

CHOICE

Respecting each person’s right to make their own decisions.

RESPECT

Valuing every person for who they are, recognising their individuality.

OUR APPROACH

Supporting people, not changing them

We work with people, not for them. Our approach is centred on respect, choice and individuality, supporting each person to live life at their own pace and in their own way.

We don’t believe people need to be “fixed”. Instead, we meet each person where they are, taking time to understand their interests, strengths, values and aspirations.

We encourage independence, confidence and connection — whether that means getting involved in the community, spending time outdoors, developing an interest or simply having someone alongside you when that’s what is needed.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

Making a difference in our community

Really friendly team at Number 45, providing great supports for the community and a number of different services and activities available throughout the week. It’s also a lovely space to spend time in and the exhibition of artwork created in Number 45 are wonderful too!

Please continue to do everything that you are doing for everyone in the community. You are working magic. Each and every staff member is just so important in keeping such a wonderful service working like clockwork. You may all take a bow for the part you play each day in the importance of Number 45. Each and every person who uses the service knows how valuable it is. Don’t change a thing. You can’t improve on perfection.
